Ohakune Mountain Rd - 1,000m Vertical Descent

Suitable for beginners up. 1-2 hours - good brakes needed! 17.5 kms downhill. 1000m descent. A nice easy ride with amazing alpine views over your shoulder. 

This ride takes you from alpine herb fields, through tussock land, alpine forest, then beech forest, then huge podocarp tree forests - a huge variety of vegetation, plus views. It's a completely sealed road from top to bottom.

You can catch a ride to the top and it's all downhill back into town, this makes it all downhill riding. There are great cafe's and pubs to reward you at the bottom of the mountain road, and in Ohakune.

Once below the hairpin (approx 5km) on your descent on the left hand side of the road is the famous Gollum's Pool from the Lord of the Rings Movie Trilogy and also Mangawhero falls, this can be a great spot for a quick swim or just somewhere to dip your toes into the glacier fed prestine mountain river.

There is an optional stop off just below the 11.5km Mark on the way down and that is to visit the Waitonga Falls, it is a short 45 min walk along a well sign posted track to the Falls and back.

You now have the option to branch off onto the Te Ara Mangawhero Trail also at the 3.5km mark, this new trail branch is just up from the DOC campsite and branches either left or right on the side of the Ohakune Mountain Road.
